Prospect 33 is a niche consultancy focused on the financial services industry, primarily the investment banking industry in New York and London. We have a footprint of clients spread around the US and Europe in locations ranging from Jacksonville, FL to Boston, MA. We deliver a range of consulting services to our clients including some contract placement and some project consulting services. We have also built a unique training course focused on developing the next generation of “Future Leaders” for the financial services industry.

We are currently assisting one of our clients in their search for a Controller for their New York office. This position supports the accounting, reporting and process controls related to the financial activities of the Company by performing, or assisting in the performance of, the primary responsibilities listed below.

  • The maintenance and accuracy of the company’s general ledger.
  • Timely preparation and review of the company’s Financial Statements.
  • Supports the Bank’s Broker-Dealer accounting and reporting processes.
  • Research and keep abreast of new accounting guidance and changes to existing guidance applicable to the Company. When necessary adjust related processes accordingly and update related individuals and senior management as applicable.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the month-end close process, normally within 5-7 business days of month-end.
  • Managing and monitoring general ledger system and ensure adequate controls are in place/maintained surrounding the general ledger. Perform variance analysis, research and explain unusual/large variances. Review and approve general ledger entries as necessary. Review monthly management reports which include, but not limited to; financial statements, press release and ratios for accuracy prior to being distributed throughout the Company.
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely coordination, preparation and review of the Company’s quarterly and annual Financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (U.S. GAAP). This process includes some preparation but mostly review of financial statements, footnotes and supporting workpapers for accuracy and compliance with accounting guidance. As well as addressing all related auditors’ review edits.
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors, regulators, and request for information, providing timely and appropriate responses for requested information.
  • Assist with maintaining the books and records for the Banks’ Broker Dealer subsidiary, and as necessary, serve as back-up to the group’s accounting personnel.
  • Making recommendations regarding the accounting of reserves, assets, and expenditures.
  • Conducting studies and submits recommendations for improving the organization’s accounting operation.
  • As necessary, assisting the Company’s FP&A group with budget and forecast business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings.
  • Assisting in the preparation of departmental budget and prepares necessary supporting documentation and justification.
  • Keeping abreast of developments relevant to accounting, regulatory, systems and procedures and makes appropriate recommendations for improving efficiency and compliance.
  • Ensure Accounting Policies and Procedures are created when necessary and updated/maintained in accordance with Company guidelines.
  • Responsible for reviewing and ensuring the accuracy of financial reports/information, regulatory and tax filings, prior to distribution/filing.
  • Ensure reconciliation are being performed consistent with Company procedures, sample and review reconciliations, review aged items report and escalate and recommend items for write-off as deemed appropriate.
  • Serve as Assistant Accounting Committee Chair to the Controller and work on special project teams to address accounting issues related to existing/new products, new accounting pronouncements and policies, etc.


Job Requirements

Successful Candidates Will Possess:

  • BA/BS Degree in Accounting or equivalent experience. A minimum of 6 to 10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience required, of which 1 to 2 of those years must be in either public accounting or financial services. CPA or other professional certification highly desired.
  • Specific experience within Financial Institution Industry and in particular comprehensive knowledge with General Ledger close and Financial Reporting requirements.
  • Experience working with external auditors and regulators/examiners.
  • Proficient in, and demonstrated skill at, the following computer applications: Word, Excel, Accounting software, PowerPoint, Foxit and Database software.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Responsible, flexible individual with strong mathematical and analytical skills and an extensive knowledge of all aspects of accounting, in general and specifically as applied to financial institutions.
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing; presents ideas in a clear, concise, understandable, and organized manner.
  • Willingness to take on special projects as they arise.
  • Ability to work individually or in a collaborative environment and meet tight deadlines.
